I Quit Going to Church

Dear Church,

“Tis the season” that offers great opportunities to “be the church” in many and varied tangible ways. One of those opportunities just happened last week as we (again) gave away 30 full Thanksgiving dinners complete with Honey Baked Ham, real mashed potatoes, homemade pumpkin pies and much more to some families that needed a little help! Thank you so much to our Community Engagement team, to those that donated food, to all those that came out to help peel, boil, and mash potatoes, to those that baked pies, and to those that delivered dinners! What a tremendous blessing to those that received the meals!

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, Christmas is fast approaching, along with more opportunities to bless some folks in need. Here are a few of the ways you can join the fun:

  • We’re adopting some families for Christmas. Watch for details this Sunday!
  • We have (again) adopted two fellow pastoral families that serve smaller congregations here on our KC District and will be receiving love offerings for them in both of our Christmas Eve services (5:00 and 9:00 pm). Thank you for your past generosity and I look forward to how God will use us to bless them again this year! If you won’t be around on Christmas Eve, you’re welcome to give ahead of time. Just mark your gift “Christmas Eve Love Offering.”
  • Now that winter is here, the Kansas City Rescue Mission (KCRM) is in need of H.U.G.S. (Hats, Underwear, Gloves, Socks). They need NEW beanies (stocking caps), NEW men’s underwear (all sizes), NEW water-resistant winter gloves, and NEW men’s socks (any color). We’ll be collecting these items throughout the month of December (instead of a food item for the community pantry as we usually do).

We’ve said it before, but it really is true. We never reflect the heart of God more than when we give — with a happy heart. “For God so loved the world that he GAVE …!” It’s possible to give without loving, but it’s impossible to love without giving!

Happy giving!

Joel
